Interestingly, Barca are attempting to stop Messi from going on the grounds that they have Champions League qualifiers to play and he is a crucial part of that and the impact on the club failure to qualify would have caused by them not having the player in their team:

Why aren't WE getting tough? Lucas, not a problem really, but we need Masch and Babbel for the Champions League qualifiers. Why isn't someone at our club getting this sorted? As much as I hate to think of things in these terms, there is a lot of money riding on those two games, money we desperately need.

As much as I rate Plessis, I'd rather have the security of Masch and the choice of Aurelio (if he makes it through the pre-season friendlies unscathed) and Babbel on the left than to have to pin our hopes on Leto or to have to use Pennant (if he's still with us) or Benny there.

If the IOC allow Barca to withold Messi we really need to be doing the same. I feel for Babbel having missed the Euros, but sorry old son, LFC pay your wages not the Dutch Olympic Association.
