It's great fun all this isn't it?

I'm not a gambling man (save the odd lottery ticket and an annual grand national flutter) but I would recommend sticking a fiver on Barry being a Red by the end of this window.

Not that you'd win much, I doubt the odds are too open!

yes, I'd reckon Barry has more chance of being a red, as opposed to a villa man, by the end of the window.

And anyways, doesn't UEFA determine when the window closes (and Not Martin O'Neill)?  Or perhaps the ulsterman has led a coup and Platini has been ridden out of town on the rail.

@ skippy, good question re formation.  Keane is gonna give us options (as the second striker, on the righthand side, and even as an offensive central midfielder if needs be).  Barry is trickier.  I'm not sure what Rafa has in mind there.  We will have so many quality midfielders - alonso, monster, gerrard, barry. I think Kuyt and Babel are also central to Rafa's plans.  We are going to have so much quality and so many possibilities.

re formation, i reckon Rafa has Barry down to play on the left of midfield in a 4-4-2 or in 4-2-3-1.

This would line up with LB and RB bombing forward to get to the byline with Barry providing crosses and coming inside - my issue with this, and whole Barry transfer, is that he is not the fastest player around and is he actually improving on what we have?

Dead ball wise, yes, he would improving us on corners and crosses from the left.
Playing in the Prem already, he won't have to bed in.
but aside of this, i'm not so sure what extra he gives us.[/li][/list]

You can get an 81% return on investment if you bet on Barry leaving with Betfair. Now, if the Americans stick 500 million on him to leave and offer Villa 40 million for Barry that's our stadium sorted!  :D :D

Liverpool won't give up on Gareth Barry deal

by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL are refusing to give up on signing Gareth Barry despite Aston Villa's insistence that the deal is now off.

A day of complex talks was brought to a halt by Villa at 5pm yesterday, according to the terms of a deadline imposed by the Midlands club.

That was despite the fact Liverpool had met Villa's financial demands for Barry, as laid out in written correspondence between the two clubs.

A cash plus player deal was agreed and those closest to the transfer expected the 27-year-old to finally get his move to Anfield.

But on Tuesday afternoon – as Liverpool arrived in Valencia for last night's friendly against Villarreal – Reds officials learned that Villa had decided to change the payment schedule.

With Villa's arbitrary 5pm deadline fast approaching, Liverpool asked for a further 48 hours to be able to put the necessary finance structure in place with their banks to meet the new demands but this request was refused.

Villa, whose manager Martin O'Neill criticised Liverpool for doing business in public at the start of this long running saga, then put a statement out on their official club website stating the deal was off.

What is Martin O'Neill playing at here. He is really messing Barry around and I don't see how they can patch up their relationship now. If its true that the clubs agreed a fee but Liverpool we late in paying it I think Villa and O'Neill need to cop themselves on. Issueing statements that Barry stays and plastering it all over the media when they know its not that clear is extremely silly. On SSN last night they interviewed someone from the Villa supporters club and he was delighted that Barry was staying. So not only are they messing us and Barry about they have now moved on to their own fans. What a joke.

O'Neill has gone right down in my estimation this summer. If he took the money 2 months ago he could have replaced Barry with Bentley or someone. Now he'll be scrabbling around looking for a replacement with the deadline looming and may not get anybody. Serves him right.

I can't see the original Mail report being accurate, at least not the figures quoted. The other week it was Finnan + £17M as O'Neill laughably valued Finnan at a paltry £1M. Now it seems he's halved in value to £500K.

if Barrett's article is correct, and then adding it to quotes I have seen elsewhere today, the timeframe would have been:

Monday meeting between MON, Lerner, Barry and Barry's agent, deadline established (for Wednesday 5pm).  MON said: "We had a very positive meeting on Monday when it was agreed between Gareth, his agent (Alex Black), (club owner) Mr (Randy) Lerner and myself that a deadline should be communicated to Liverpool to finally resolve the situation. Liverpool were informed and that deadline came and passed. Now we can all look forward to the coming season with relief, anticipation and ambition."

Tuesday Villa decided to change the payment schedule. Liverpool surprised and asked for a further 48 hours in order to get the finances in place.

Wednesday 5pm, MON happily declares that deadline is now past. He says: "Naturally we're all absolutely delighted that Gareth will be staying at Villa Park and relieved to find a resolution and closure to the saga."

Now looking at that time frame, one has to wonder if the whole deadline and change of payment schedule the following day, was not all part of a masterplan.  Tuesday's turn of events make no sense otherwise.

The Flip-Flopping Gossip
Posted 31/07/08 08:26EmailPrintSave

THE BARRY DEAL IS OR ISN'T DEAD
The papers are split 50/50 on the Gareth Barry saga, with half of them believing Villa won't sell, and the other half saying Barry will insist on being allowed to move anyway. Despite Martin O'Neill saying Barry had agreed on Monday that he was happy to stay if no deal had been struck by last night. If true, is three days a new record for a player to change his mind after pledging to stay?

Oh, except The Sun, which is again backing Arsenal to swoop in with a player-exchange offer and land Barry.

We have no idea which way this one will go. But Liverpool are certainly scrabbling around for cash like a junkie down the back of the sofa, which means they're ready to flog...

...JERMAINE PENNANT TO BLACKBURN
Having got rid of a good Arsenal reject, Paul Ince intends to bring in a bad one. Jermaine Pennant is apparently a '£6m-rated winger' - we know - and Ince is happy to spend some of those notes that Spurs tossed in his general direction in securing the ex-con's signature.

Despite claiming in their statement that “all parties” agreed to the 5pm deadline, it is understood that Barry did not.

Liverpool also deny they agreed to such a deadline.

Jeepers, Villa are badly disrupting their own summer transfer endeavours.

This Barry debacle is without doubt the most spiteful hate-laden transfer that I have ever encountered involving Liverpool FC.

Villa have no class.  imho   For example, we had to let Kevin Keegan leave (and he went on to be European Player of the Year twice) and yet there was no immaturity or histrionics on our part.  Souness left as well, when he still had a few more good years in him.  Again, no histrionics, or toys out of pram.

Villa have a lot to learn.

Villa picked off West Ham's captain Reo Coker, Watford's best player Ashley Young and WBA's big talent Curtis Davies, all on O'Neill's watch and none of those clubs kicked off.
